Utah State MONOPOLY® Championship Video Transcript:

Hello, my friends. It’s Bryan here. If you know me, you probably know that I believe life is about knowledge, relationships, and experiences. One of the ways that I love to learn and grow, connect with others and have more fun, is to play games.

Which is part of the reason I’ll be hosting the Utah State MONOPOLY Championship here in Sandy, Utah July 15th. If you’re interested, visit my website bryanmiller.com to learn more and sign up.
Having said that and being in a MONOPOLY state of mind, I want to share with you this idea that can help you not only win more MONOPOLY games but be more effective in life. It’s a simple idea, that’s not necessarily easy. It’s this; It’s to pay attention.

I’ll tell you where I see this come up in MONOPOLY. One of the first ways is to notice if somebody lands on your property and ask them for rent. If you’re not paying attention, it’s not the responsibility of the people who land on your properties to pay you. You’re got to ask. That’s a simple thing that can make a big difference, especially if you own houses or hotels. I’ve seen it happen more than once where somebody lands on a property and somebody had a hotel, I’ve seen it where somebody had a hotel on Boardwalk, and because they weren’t paying attention, they didn’t ask. When somebody landed on it, they didn’t collect rent, that’s $2,000.

Another area of MONOPOLY that’s a relatively simple idea that can make a big difference is paying attention to the Chance Cards. There’s only 16. They go in the same order. Once you’ve seen them all revealed, which is pretty normal in the course of a game, you’ll know which ones are coming up. If you’re paying attention, you’ll know when the advance to Boardwalk card comes; when the advance to Saint Charles card comes; when to go back three, it might make somebody land on New York. If you take that opportunity to initiate a trade or to buy houses or hotels that somebody’s more likely to land on, it can be a huge advantage. It’s what investors like to call an a-symmetric return; very disproportionate advantage. A couple of really basic, simple ways, and another way of paying attention that makes a big difference at MONOPOLY is knowing who owns what. If you remember, if you’ve paid attention when those properties were purchased and you who owns what, you can initiate a trade more effectively. Yeah, it’s right there, and that same thing is true when it comes to who owns how much money. I don’t reveal how much money I have, but I pay attention to about how much money do others have. When I initiate trades, I use that knowledge to my advantage.

Some of those might be the meta-level of MONOPOLY. You might think it’s a simple kids game. In some ways it is. But like everything, if you look at it deeply, there are some pretty cool nuances you can find.

With that, I hope that you will play MONOPOLY with me. By the way, I won’t be competing in this year’s MONOPOLY Tournament. I was the 1999 Utah State MONOPOLY Champion. I’m still holding on to that glory, but I want to provide the opportunity for others. To experience the fun of competitive Monopoly. Play. Come play. Have fun. And do good. I look forward to talking to you again real soon. Until then, take care.
