What is life about? It’s one of my favorite questions to ask somebody that I’ve just met for the first time. You’ll learn a lot about somebody when you ask that question. And not just because of what they say, but even how they answer the question. Do they have a ready response? Do they know? Do they answer with conviction? Certainty? Or are they confused? Exasperated? Do they turn the question around? I find it fascinating.

In the last video, I shared with you an idea designed to help you make better decisions so that you can live with greater levels of happiness and meaning. I promised in a follow-up video to share another idea that will help you make better decisions. You’re watching that video. This is it.

This idea is one that’s really quite simple but again, not always easy. It’s to really know what your life is about. I saw this in my dad’s (Larry H. Miller) life when he was at a difficult time, and somebody asked him, “What manner of man ought you to be?” That really jolted him from the ‘busy-ness,’ from the activity, from all the work he was doing to grow his own business. He did take that question very seriously. It changed the direction of his life.

Ralph Waldo Emerson tells us that the only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be. How does this idea help us make better decisions? It’s this, if you haven’t already, being very deliberate about answering the question, two questions; What kind of person do I ultimately want to become in this life time? And two, what do I want my life to really be about? These are two questions that taken together Tony Robbins calls our Ultimate Destiny.

If you really look at that, write it down, think it through, you feel on it, you refine it, whatever it takes, to get something committed to paper. To get it outside of yourself. Look at it. Sit with it. See how that feels. When I did that, one of the things that I came up with really was a sense of confirmation. For me, life has been about knowledge, relationships, and experiences. It’s about those things because I believe those are ultimately things that become us.

We can share those with other people without diminishing ourselves in any way. If there’s anything that we can take with us after this lifetime, I believe it must only be those things. Knowledge, relationships, and experiences. One of the ways that that shows up for me is by making videos like this. I say that my mission is to help achievers to learn & grow, connect and have more fun. It’s my hope that these videos do those things for you.

It’s only one of the ways. I’m writing a book. I’m growing a business. I’m raising a family. There’s a lot of different ways that gets expressed. It all starts as Carl Sandburg tells us, the poet, nothing happens until at first a dream. Or unless a dream. How does that help you make better decisions?

When you’re clear about who you want to be and what you want your life to really be about, in the big picture, in the long term. Any decision that you’re faced with, any opportunity, any challenge, any problem, any trial, and then look at it against the back drop of that bigger picture and see how a given course of action, a particular decision will either move you closer to or take you away from that ultimate destiny you consciously created for yourself.

If you haven’t done that already or something like it, I invite you, I implore you, to make the time, invest in yourself. Write it down. Refer to it. Live into that. With that, thank you very much for watching. I look forward to talking to you again very soon. Until then, take care. – Bryan Miller
